Radical Passive

Minsk Residence

Interiors Houses Belarus 2022-03-07

Alvar and Aino Aalto's project was designed to provide a starting point for a new apartment for a young couple. Radical Passive focused the house's style on light, warmth and timelessness -- features that Alvar and Aino Aalto are known for in their work.

The building is located in a new suburb on the outskirts of Minsk, and unlike the new building, the interior of the apartment is restricted by the existing building structure. In addition to the open kitchen and expanded bathroom, Radical Passive also focused on updating the space by introducing new colours, materials and furniture.

White was chosen as the main wall color, which was a classic choice, but it has an additional function here: to bring light into this home. A secondary color is light oak veneer for furniture, cabinetry and wall paneling. The choice of material is another nod to Aaltos, whose Finnish designs often feature this wood.

Just as Aaltos' work extends from architecture to furniture and home accessories, the design of the house bears their name. Radical passivity is not just content with the interior design of the apartment. Almost all of the furniture was designed specifically for the apartment, and in some rooms, the furniture acts as an architectural substitute, defining the existing walls and Spaces that cannot be modified. Other items in the home were carefully curated by architects and many items were crafted by local artisans.
