PH House, a historic villa in Copenhagen, has been restored and rebuilt by local design studio Norm Architects after it suffered a devastating fire. The house is said to have been the home of renowned Danish architect, designer and cultural critic Poul Henningsen.

Now home to a family of three, the historic villa has remained in its original state with beautiful high panels, parquet floors, low paned Windows, teak furniture, and more, but has finally become a modern home. The original building of the villa was rebuilt after a fire in 2014. By increasing the height of the exterior walls, from about 40 square meters to 100 square meters, the top floor makes the house more suitable for a modern family.

Through a clean and minimalist approach, the classic elements of the house are restored and elegantly combined with contemporary details to form a timeless interior and an overall warm aesthetic. Black medieval teak furniture contrasts with minimal marble plinth, with a clean and elegant feel set off by plain white walls and black saw-cut smoked oak built in kitchen elements. The light comes in from different angles and every room in the house is bright, full of daylight and comfortable.

The ground floor of the house is transformed from a small partitioned room into a large living area with Windows on all sides, only subdivided in the centre by bespoke elements; A large kitchen cabinet covered in dark oak separates the kitchen from the living room, while a central staircase creates a dynamic semi-open space with soft transitions.

Solid oak floating steps create a flow between the basement, ground floor and top floor, connecting the house vertically in a harmonious and modern way, while skylights bathe the stairs in natural light, adding to the sense of height of the house.
