As an interdisciplinary and pioneering studio, Spacon defies definition by any single style. They craft spaces, but also experiences that extend beyond the physical; they engage with branding, yet never confine themselves to the visual alone. Whether in architecture, interior design, furniture, exhibition design, or branded environments, their focus remains on the authentic relationships that unfold between people and space, material, and time. During our study trip in Denmark, we visited Spacon’s studio in Copenhagen, where founding partner Malene Hvidt personally shared their design methodology and practical approach. Through a series of projects and on-site discussions, we gained a systematic understanding of how Spacon uses “experience” as a guiding thread to build an integrated design system that works across scales and disciplines.
For Spacon, design is not a fixed outcome, but an ongoing process of redefinition. Their emphasis on an “honest and fearless” design attitude goes beyond formal aesthetics, encouraging challenges to conventional thinking through the interaction of material, spatial relationships, narrative, and function.
During her presentation, Malene described Spacon’s design logic as a constant process of exploration: design does not start from a predefined form, but emerges iteratively through experimentation among materials, function, narrative, and use. They intentionally break down the professional boundaries between architecture, furniture, exhibition design, and branding, allowing different disciplines, skills, and perspectives to collide. In Spacon’s view, truly powerful design does not strive for visual perfection, but preserves a tangible sense of authenticity and vitality within the imperfect.
