Makoto Nakayama is a Japanese architect based in Sapporo, Hokkaido. In 1988, he founded Makoto Nakayama Architects specializing in the design of residences, ryokans, restaurants, commercial, and cultural facilities. His architectural philosophy emphasizes dialogue with nature, light, and atmosphere. Through simplicity and spatial voids, he creates depth of experience, reflecting a keen sensitivity to both the environment and regional culture.

Makoto Nakayama Architects is located in Sapporo’s Chuo Ward, with a practice spanning architectural and interior design, construction supervision, and cultural facility renovation. Deeply inspired by traditional Japanese architecture and gardens—such as Kyoto’s Katsura Imperial Villa and machiya townhouses—the office integrates these influences into contemporary needs, creating spaces that are understated, refined, and immersive, with a strong sense of place and nature.

Representative works include the acclaimed retreat Zaborin Ryokan, created in collaboration with Shouya Grigg; the seaside ryokan Ryotei Kuki near Hakodate; and the luxury resort hotel Sansui Niseko. These projects have garnered international recognition and established Makoto Nakayama and his firm as significant contributors to the cultural and resort architecture of Hokkaido.
