Workstead

Workstead is a New York-based design studio founded in 2009 by Stefanie Brechbuehler and Robert Highsmith, specializing in architecture, interior design and product design.

Born in Switzerland, Stefanie Brechbuehler grew up in the Southwest Desert away from Venezuela. She graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago with a degree in Interior. Architecture and a Bachelor of Arts with Honours from the Rhode Island School of Design. She also studied at the Zurich School of Art and Design. Prior to founding Workstead Studio, she worked with Gensler, Roman and Williams, Stempel Form, Gluckman Mayner and Michael Graves.

Born in Wilson, North Carolina, Robert Highsmith has been interested in sound, materials and architecture, and holds a BA in Musical Arts from Furman University in South Carolina. After fifteen years of formal music training, his interest led him to switch to architectural design and earned a master's degree in architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design. Prior to founding Workstead, he worked at Richard Berliner in Los Angeles, Stempel Form in Utah, and Skinner Lamm and Highsmith in North Carolina.

Ryan Mahoney joined Workstead in 2010 with a background in sculpture, set design and architectural design. He earned a bachelor's degree from the Art Institute of Chicago and worked at the Redmoon Theatre in Chicago. He then went to the Rhode Island School of Design to receive his master's degree in architecture and graduated with Stefanie Brechbuehler. Before joining Workstead, he worked for a New England small construction company for several years.

Workstead creates space and products through a comprehensive design approach that enhances the sense of status in an increasingly chaotic world. Their work is both functional and iconic, expressing their interest in practicality, form and material strength.
