Located in Venice, California (one block from the Venice Beach Boardwalk), a vibrant creative neighborhood, the Lighthouse is situated on the historic site of the 1939 Venice Post Office, a WPA-era building. It reinterprets the building’s original role as a communications hub for the digital age.
The newly designed interiors embody an industrial style blended with warm touches and influences from Brutalist architecture, as well as Le Corbusier’s inspiration for Japanese libraries. The design is led by Warkentin Associates.
Members and residents have access to facilities for filming, recording, editing, podcasting, cooking, live streaming, performance, speaking, screening, writing and co-creation, as well as a vibrant central café—seamlessly blending technology with real-life collaboration. The Lighthouse fosters a vibrant creative ecosystem where innovation, production and community can flourish under the same roof.
Inspired by Bauhaus principles, the design employs simple, industrial materials such as steel, glass and concrete, aligning with the idea of being "true to the material". Paul Rudolph’s textured plasterwork and Le Corbusier’s treatment of staircases as sculptural experiences also informed the architectural details.
The Warkentin Associates team created a space called "Lighthouse Live" on the first floor, combining a live podcast studio and a vinyl DJ booth. It was inspired by the college radio aesthetic in the 1997 film "Grosse Pointe Blank".The design of the Lighthouse Library and open office space was influenced by Japanese libraries, especially Arata Isozaki’s 1966 Oita Prefectural Library. The aim was to blur the boundary between work and social space.
Various metals, wood, glass, and concrete are used throughout the building. Color is introduced subtly through furniture, rugs and accessories. Forbo panels in desaturated shades of green define the private offices.
Following the Venice campus, the Brooklyn Beacon campus will open soon in the historic 1866 Pencil Factory in Greenpoint, also designed by Warkentin Associates. A third campus will launch in London in 2026, forming a global, year-round network for creatives.
"We believe that creativity comes from the collision of original thinking and daring spirit. They are your muses, competitors and accomplices. We built a campus that brings together all the tools, support, and inspiration under one roof... Keep learning. Keep creating. Keep playing."——Lighthouse
