Rob Mills' design captures the essence of life and gives an internal understanding of its meaning. And he knows how to detail Spaces by making the simple luxuries of life part of the everyday experience. He believes that plenty of air and light, quality materials and well-designed Spaces are all elements that create a good living experience.

The design of Hawksburn Residence directly links the house to the street, mixing material tones from both natural and man-made materials to play on the strength of both to some extent. The fine line brick from Denmark has a unique handmade feature balanced with an anodized alumina frame to accommodate large landscape Windows. The house has a great view of the city but faces west, so automatic shutters within the home adjust heat and light to the sun.

The vestibule features an extensive spiral staircase, 4 meters wide at its widest point, threaded from top to bottom by bronze sculptural lights. In terms of natural light, a wide circular skylight is located at the top of the spiral staircase, and a smaller skylight in the master bathroom enlivenes the space with light changes at different times of the day.

This is a house for entertaining and the kitchen is one of the longest Rob Mills has ever designed in the house. An island bench in the kitchen descends to form a dining table that connects with the outdoor dining environment. There is a real sense of continuity and unity in the house both horizontally and vertically. The protected exterior entertainment area takes advantage of the warmth of the brick, with not only a barbecue, fire and wood-fire pizza oven, but also a teppanyaki plate built into the surface of the table.
