Rick Joy

Aman Giri Resort

The Aman Giri Resort is located at canyon Point Campsite in southern Utah and was designed by renowned architects Rick Joy. The 34-room luxury hotel, which opened in 2009, sits in a protected valley with sweeping views of the colorful rocks leading up to the Grand Staircase. Aman Giri, which means' peaceful mountain ', incorporates the surrounding landscape into the design.

The interior of the hotel is surrounded by desert. It consists of a concrete geometric plane that protrudes into the shoulder of the rock. The architects use geometric shapes and mutually sloping walls to provide spectacular canyon views across the desert. The resort's central area offers a great guest room experience that can accommodate reception, dining and living rooms. It has four fireplace niches and comfy sofas and armchairs. On the other side, the resort has a restaurant and a curving pool that wraps around a sandstone hill. The architects created a place that respects and celebrates the magic and mystery of southern Utah's majestic cliffs.

Rick Joy describes the house as "an assertion of a way of living in the landscape". He believes that architecture is educational, and in the process, the more you create, the more you learn about nature. In fact, the relationship between architecture and the environment is romantic, and it just so happens that architecture is the most telling. People don't need a watch to see the trajectory of the sun in different places throughout the day and know what time of day it is. Rick Joy calls his design process a way to learn about nature and architecture, and rammed earth walls set his buildings apart.
