Nicole Hollis & Walker Warner

Kua Bay

Nicole Hollis and Walker Warner teamed up to built this family resort with spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. The house is in the spirit of the Mauka-Makai, a symbolic lava flow from the mountains to the sea, through a direct connection to the volcanic landscape and the spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. The hillside entrance to the property was cut into the lava field to limit its visual impact and establish privacy with the surrounding neighbors. The horizontal structure features clean lines, large openings and simple geometry, reflecting the horizon of the ocean and providing an elegant transition from lava to the ocean.
The base captures the stark contrast between land and sea in Hawaii's terrain. Black lava forms a dramatic backdrop to the building's hillside. By the sea, adjacent to the turquoise sea, you feel as if you are standing on the edge of the earth. The challenge for the project was how to handle the site and integrate the building into the landscape while providing an elegant and multi-level experience from the mountain to the sea.
