Nicole Hollis and Walker Warner have teamed up to create Kua Bay, a family resort with spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. The house is in the spirit of Mauka-Makai through its direct connection to the volcanic landscape and spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. The side entrance of the house is cut into the lava field to limit its visual impact and establish privacy with the surrounding neighbors. The horizontal structure features clean lines, large entrances and simple geometry that reflect the ocean horizon and provide an elegant transition from lava to ocean.

The base captures the stark contrast of land and sea in Hawaii's terrain. Black lava forms a dramatic backdrop to the building on a hillside. By the sea, adjacent to the turquoise waterfront, it feels as if you are standing on the edge of the earth. The challenge for the project was how to approach the site so that the building would blend with the landscape while providing an elegant and multi-layered experience from mountain to sea.

Entering the automatic courtyard, there is a garage, also embedded in the natural lava terrain. The roof, coupled with lava and native grass, emphasizes the building's direct relationship to the site. From the courtyard to the distant sea view, all appear orderly, bringing a transitional experience. The overall interior design of Kua Bay by Nicole Hollis was inspired by the sense of tranquility and movement surrounding it. Materials include rough jute and rope, lush linen, hand-carved marble, warm metals such as brass and bronze and ebony. This is to create a carefully curated environment for the client, anchored by special, highly personalized items such as the haute couture bed in the master bedroom.
