By reinventing the classical notions of hospitality, hotelier João Rodrigues and his family restored an ancient Lisbon building, transforming it into their family home and graciously opening its doors to guests. It is not a conventional hotel, as in contrast, Santa Clara 1728, is a homecoming and a destination for lifelong friends to gather. It stands as a testament to the conversation between people and place, and how Portuguese life and culture is the collision of a rich and beautiful past, as well as a dynamically diverse present.
Architect Manuel Aires Mateus and owner João Rodrigues, embraced the building's original structure and the architectural heritage of the site. Great care was taken during the renovations, to ensure that its vernacular past was maintained, while integrating contemporary design features.
Being here is a journey through the elements and a delight for the senses. Santa Clara 1728 serves as a bridge between the vivid exterior and the quiet interior of the city.We felt that it was important for guests to experience the fullness of Portuguese life - present in the materials and artistic construction, the views of the city and river, the food served at the communal table, the spirit of family, and the invitation to gather together and share.
The house now opens its doors and welcomes guests through a grand portal, which leads into an entrance hall with high ceilings. A huge moon-shaped lamp, lounge sofas and an antique painting determine the atmosphere. The adjacent dining room contains a six meter long, custom oak wood table, offering seating for 20 people. Guests from around the world come together like family and friends gathering over breakfast and lunch.
Meticulous, yet thoughtful attention was paid to detail, material, and craftsmanship. Traditional building methods were employed. Handmade furniture was chosen over mass produced pieces. The presence of Lioz marble and wall engravings, were intentionally incorporated to enhance the sensory experience one would experience while inside.
The house is furnished with delicate, yet detailed pieces. Each one was thoughtfully selected for the comfort of our guests. The lights which illuminate the interior, were personally selected by Davide Groppi, an Italian light designer. Some of the best pieces of his collection, like the 'Moon', 'Simbiosi' or 'Mira R' provide different moods and experiences throughout the house. When not lit from within, the generous windows allow natural light and the shimmering reflections of the river to pour inside.
Santa Clara 1728 is a family house and therefore, it remains alive with the rhythms of daily and seasonal routines. Guests are invited to join in and experience, share the pulse, beauty and charm of life in Lisbon.
