Ace Hotel Kyoto

Kyoto is a city that generates creativity and inspires tourism, and we hope Ace will become a central gathering place for locals and tourists alike.——Kelly Sawdon, CEO of Ace Hotel

Ace Hotel in Kyoto, Japan, opened in April 2020, the first Hotel in Asia for the award-winning us Hotel chain, designed by renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma and Los Angeles Design studio Commune Design. It is a monument to the city's rich art, nature, evolving culture, exquisite craftsmanship and profound history.

"For 20 years, we have wanted to do a project in Japan, working with visionary people like Kengo Kuma and her old friend Commune Design, to make it even more special," said Kelly Sawdon, CEO of Ace Hotel. "Kyoto is a city that generates creativity and inspires tourism, and we hope Ace will become a central gathering place for locals and tourists alike."

Kengo Kuma set out to design a cultural catalyst that would allow different people to visit and create a seamless relationship with the Kyoto community. He personally oversaw the transformation of the building into a 213-room hotel inspired by the history of Kyoto, the former headquarters of the Kyoto central telephone company, and thus a mixture of old and new.

The team's goal was to create a fusion of American and Japanese styles, drawing on the work of western architects and designers in Japan, such as Charlotte Perriand JB Blunk. So in general, Ace Hotel Kyoto's design philosophy is rooted in the exchange of arts and crafts between east and west.
