The spaces we inhabit are woven from countless elements. Yet among them, furniture is not merely a physical presence, but the essence that gives a space its character and purpose. Even the most carefully designed room remains incomplete until the right piece of furniture breathes life into it. Furniture takes many forms through different finishes and materials, but wood remains the most widely used. Wood, derived directly from trees, comes in countless varieties, depending on its place of origin, moisture content, and environmental conditions. Each type carries unique characteristics that furniture makers must study carefully in order to choose the right wood for the intended use. If this process is neglected, even the most beautifully designed furniture cannot fulfill its true purpose.
Ang-gomeullang, a long-time partner of EVBR, is dedicated exclusively to handcrafted, made-to-order production. Instead of relying on machines, every step is carried out by hand, creating truly one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture. Fate brought us together again through a new project. This project space combines a showroom and a café, with EVBR responsible for spatial design and [ Ang-gomeullang ] for the furniture. We share Ang-gomeullang ’s conviction that “value is created by rigorous effort,” and we designed the space so that it might echo that philosophy.
Ang-gomeullang ’s furniture cannot be described as “flawlessly sleek.” This does not imply that the finishing is incomplete, but rather that they are alive with the human touch, a testament to craftsmanship itself. Because every process is carried out by hand, each piece bears subtle variations depending on its form. Instead of being “flaws,” these differences make the furniture timeless and endearing, remembered as pieces that never grow tiresome with age.
Inspired by this handcrafting process, we approached the space with the same care and completed it piece by piece, as though crafting furniture. We began by exploring raw wood, the essence of furniture making. With minimal processing, we aimed to preserve wood’s naturally rough yet warm texture throughout the space. This approach is expressed in the built-in sofa’s backrest, balancing functionality and visual impact, and in a freestanding structure at the storefront created by stacking unprocessed lumber, enhancing the natural beauty of the displayed furniture.
At the rear, we installed base cabinets for coffee shop operations and upper shelves to showcase objects. Along the walls, we created exhibition spaces to display tools used in furniture-making or by-products from the crafting process, transforming the act of making furniture itself into an exhibition. As for the façade, the existing floor-to-ceiling windows seemed to take away the focus on the space, and we addressed this by lowering the ceiling and dividing the windows into frames of varying sizes. From the outside, the windows spark curiosity, while from the inside, they provide privacy while allowing in soft natural light. This allows the space to capture the subtle changes of daylight throughout the day, enhancing the details of both furniture and space.
