French Farmhouse

Interiors Houses France 2022-04-08

In Luberon, a mountainous region in central Provence, France, a centuries-old house sits on a plot of land covering nearly 136 acres. Farm animals roam the yard, newly planted with native trees such as sycamore, weeds and olive trees. A decade ago, local legend Alexandre Lafourcade renovated this French Farmhouse and brought it into the 21st century.

During several pandemic lockdowns, homeowners began thinking about giving the interior of their peaceful farmhouse a little makeover. They visited Paris-based Peruvian interior designer Diego Delgado-Elias, who recalled, "The house was interesting, but lacked soul because of the lack of details and materials."

Diego Delgado-Elias followed the client's suggestion to create a spiritual atmosphere for this stunning country house: use more materials and less color. The walls were painted with rough stucco, and one layer was covered with woven Lafite. All 10 cm standard plates were removed and replaced. Small additions add to the richness of the interior, and the designers are aware of the elegant, earthy tones, with heavy tones such as ivory and nuts.

To blend the room with its surroundings, the designer sought out local artisans to use local materials, and Delgdo-Elias commissioned decorative painter Elvira Solana to add visual interest to the stairs and walls around the house. She looked to the courtyard for inspiration, allowing horses, wild boars and olive trees to find their way into her eccentric imagery.
