Cloisters is a unique workplace that offers a sanctuary of calm and a strong connection to nature. Arranged around a central courtyard featuring a living green wall, it comprises a collection of historic brick buildings that form a charming and tranquil enclave — just moments from Old Street’s Silicon Roundabout.
The development is set to include a mix of workspace, co-working lounges, meeting suites and an independent café. Daytrip was appointed to define a holistic creative direction for the renovation. Phase one, now complete, includes a new entrance, reception, offices and circulation spaces. The result is a carefully layered interior that reflects the architecture’s historic character, alongside values of craft and contemporary creativity.
Natural materials, soft textures and warm tonal finishes define the palette, creating a space that is both refined and welcoming. Sheer curtains and blinds allow for gentle light control, while considered joinery adds a clean, timeless quality. Furnishings follow a residential approach, with styling choices that cultivate a sense of belonging. The reception acts as a threshold between outdoor and indoor, continuing the arrival sequence through a quarry-tiled floor and exposed brick walls. Restored Stuart-period doors are a standout feature, their elegant proportions and hand-blown glass offering a sense of historic integrity and filtered light. These set the tone for the interior palette.
Seating in the reception contrasts deliberately, Contemporary pieces by Philippe Malouin, upholstered in aqua and burgundy, bring a bold yet welcoming energy. An oak reception desk, with rhythmic panel detailing, grounds the space. Felt wall hangings by Peace Industry and curated artworks reinforce the material richness of the scheme. Planting in the courtyard has been enhanced by Conservatory Archives, who introduced large terracotta pots and considered greenery. Café seating includes furniture originally designed by artist Bertel Thorvaldsen. Courtyard signage is hand-painted directly onto the brickwork, with graphic design by Studio Small.
Within the workspaces, radiant sail heating and cooling systems — inherited as part of the building’s sustainable infrastructure — have been restored and celebrated. Off-white Crittall-style screens diffuse natural light across glazed sections, enhancing the sense of openness. Desks by Rawside Furniture are paired with shell chairs made from recycled plastic, all specified for full recyclability at end of life. Kitchenettes are understated and functional in soft neutral tones, while adjacent breakout areas include mid-toned oak furniture from the Frama Farmhouse range. Workplace lounges mix vintage and contemporary furniture with organic forms and rich textures, offering a work environment that is not only practical but deeply comfortable — a place that invites people to dwell, collaborate, and return.
