This project transforms a fully-furnished residence in Changzhou, Jiangsu, into an elegant home themed around eclecticism, colors and textures. The interior design incorporates raw materials, wood veneers, color transitions and mottled paint finishes, creating an atmosphere that is strikingly contrasting yet quietly restrained. The original three-bedroom layout has been redesigned into a spacious two-bedroom space with a separate storage room, focusing on practicality and a well-planned storage system.
The residence is located on the ground floor, offering views of the greenery in the community. From the very beginning of the design, consideration was given to blurring the boundaries between the interior and exterior, allowing the occupants to feel the vitality of the outdoors and the rhythm that the outside space brings to the residence.
After in-depth discussions with the homeowner, we translated their needs and personal temperament into the actual space. We crafted this ambiance through color contrasts, geometric shapes and carefully selected materials, creating an elegant and tranquil residence right in the heart of the city.
Our goal is to create an elegant yet restrained ambiance that balances expressiveness and tranquility amidst striking contrasts. This is never a rigid renovation typical of "premade home revamps"; rather, it is a "container" that weaves warmth, texture and the vibrancy of daily life into the laid-back vibe of modern living.
The gray-white palette of the original pre-finished space is an industrial "safe bet", yet it reduces the area to a characterless container. We use color symbols as a scalpel, implanting highly distinctive color anchors within the space. Drawing on the color-field philosophy of Mondrian’s constructivism, we demarcate spatial zones with uncompromising visual impact. The sense of conflict created against the warm beige walls is precisely an aesthetic practice of "unity of opposites" in contemporary art.
The homeowner couple once studied and lived overseas, and they have their own understanding and research of art and design. They hope that their living space will feature high quality in terms of material textures and color ambiance. Meanwhile, they have given the designers ample room for creativity.
