Cana Guesthouse

The Cana Hotel in Bhamdoun, Lebanon, sits atop a thousand-year-old rock formation that houses Phoenician tombs. Eroded over thousands of years, a Mosaic of grey and yellow limestone surrounds the space. Solid retaining walls combine with natural rock boulders to create a quaint yet remote facade.

Stepping into the dry boulders, full of sunlight, you'll find an unexpectedly warm, habitable cave with a living room and kitchen. The earthy walls are bordered by rotating glass panels that slide toward adjacent rocks, instantly merging interior and exterior. In the living room, an unassuming fireplace takes center stage, beneath a cast concrete ceiling and old recycled wood beams. From leopard-print seats to Moroccan rugs, the layering of the furniture instinctively evokes a primordial feel. The natural and rustic kitchen, which functions conveniently, is surrounded by eucalyptus planks, where intimate and comfortable gatherings can take place.

Walking along the glass facade to the bedroom and bathroom next door, you are greeted by a sunny, tree-lined space. Rustic stone slabs with niches and lush vegetation are surrounded by laurel green TadelAkt walls, creating a sensory experience of outdoor bathing. An inviting underground tunnel leads to a full-scale wine cellar. Carved from beneath the rock is a fuchsia vaulted cube illuminated by circular skylights with an elemental and synesthetic atmosphere. The primal silence and solemn lighting matched well with the cool, humid air, which smelled of toast, oats and musk.

A hidden circular fire pit sits at the base of the massive rock structure. The flames dance dramatically over these huge rocks and remote mountains, where enchanting evenings and ceremonies can be held. Under a starry night sky, grim but pleasant, the moon's shield makes way for uplifting celebrations.
