Next to Valencia’s emblematic Mercado de Colón, in the very heart of the city, stands a series of modernist buildings from the late 19th century. Their façades, rich in ironwork, stained glass, and moldings, speak of a time when Valencia experienced a cultural and aesthetic awakening driven by the vigor of its bourgeoisie. It was the age of floral motifs, of exalting local identity, and of the dialogue with nature that inspired Art Nouveau.
It is in this setting that the GE Apartment was born, a renovation that does not seek to erase the past, but to engage in conversation with it. The project begins with a deep respect for the protected preexisting elements (moldings, ceramic floors, stained glass, and original woodwork), weaving around them a new narrative, that of a contemporary classic. Each room becomes a meeting point between centuries, where the historical and the modern coexist in harmony, without nostalgia or excess.
The home embraces a wabi-sabi aesthetic, celebrating the beauty of the imperfect and the ephemeral. Natural materials (travertine, wood, lime, linen or wool) evoke the calm and honesty that come with the passage of time. Textures speak louder than colors; the light, filtered and warm, makes the invisible visible, the serenity of an authentic space.
The furniture reinforces this timeless narrative. Together with the owners, true design enthusiasts, a carefully curated selection of vintage pieces from Nekonato Gallery has been arranged, featuring works by Percival Lafer, Sergio Rodrigues, and Alvar Aalto, which engage in dialogue with contemporary designs by Vincent Van Duysen and Viabizzuno.
Joining this conversation are bespoke pieces conceived as a natural extension of the architecture, where material, form, and function merge in harmony. A collection that does not seek to dominate, but to accompany with subtlety and balance. The GE Apartment is, at its core, a story of respect and balance: a tribute to modernist Valencia and a serene reflection on imperfect beauty.
