Varbergstoppen Viewing Platforms

Varbergstoppen is a small hill built in a southern suburb of Stockholm. This man-made landscape was created in the 1960s to take advantage of the construction of a new subway line. Urban landscape architect Holger Blom led the effort to create two perfect man-made peaks around a circular crater 100 meters in diameter. The perfect geometry of the architectural landscape inspired the work of Andre Fogelstrom to design a series of observation decks, bird towers, signs and playground equipment for the park.

As the suburbs of Varberg and Skarholmen became more densely populated, Stockholm City began to develop the landscape into a park for all ages. Migratory birds use the peaks as landmarks to navigate, so the area is known to bird-watchers.

There is a low shelter on the higher North peak, a circular bench facing views of Lake Malaren, and a compass embedded in the ground pointing out the destinations of some migratory birds, as well as local landmarks visible from the summit. A viewing tower on the lower peaks in the south offers 360 degree views of the southern Skarholmen as well as Lake Malaren and the islands. Tucked away on the hillside is a hideout for a close-up view of birds sitting in bushes and tall grass.

The shapes of these objects are all drawn from perfect circles, and they all have the same geometric elements. The structures are made of brightly-coloured concrete cast on site. Details and railings are made of steel, painted dark green, and some highlights are stainless steel.
