Waffle House

Waffle House focuses on nature, extending the previous Queen Anne style. Rob Kennon Architects has designed a series of new volumes to reposition and connect within the existing home, offering a lasting and thoughtful solution based on craftsmanship and refinement.

Waffle House sits in a similar traditional House, bringing its original principles into the new building, reshaping them through its own enhanced lens. As a complement to and renovation of the existing Queen Anne style house, the reference handmade features help define the house's original period, which was a time that celebrated the arts and crafts movement. In the Context of Melbourne, the additional form becomes a comfortable home to the existing one, shaping the lineage of the building and adding substantially to its predecessor. By establishing a series of clearly defined inserts, the existing structure acts as a new portal, opening up to its enclosure and surrounding garden Spaces and encouraging interaction.

Waffle House, built by Dimpat and landscaped by Eckersley Garden Architecture, is the product of close collaboration. The new elements of the structure play a role in volume and scale, emphasizing depth and shadow, revealing the natural and honest materials it was made of. Originally built in 1910 and designed by Christopher Cowper, the existing building is anchored in place by a masonry structure that, unlike its Victorian neighbour, shows restraint in the application of ornamentation and tinsel.

The new interior design uses concrete Waffle ceilings to form the namesake space and defines the living area as a place of connection and openness. Existing principles are brought into new territory through deep carving and redefinition of form. The lack of decoration makes the delicate nature of the joints a key part of the home, both complete and charming. As each industry merged, the craftsman's focus became clear, and each considered the other carefully. The result is a combination of wood, concrete and metal textures that allow an open embrace of the surrounding natural elements.

The lack of decoration makes the delicate nature of the joints a key part of the home, both complete and charming. Waffle House gives the same impression of rigor and detail between the old and the new, presented as a highly detailed and refreshing natural extension. Rob Kennon Architects has stretched the relevance of the house and carefully reinterpreted its original intent.
