Hovering above Tamarama Beach, 'The Carlisle' has a dream like quality, blending nostalgia with futurism. Interiors inspired by cult classic ‘American Gigolo,' it conveys both innocence and an edgy grittiness. This velvety cocoon floating above ocean vistas, is an idyllic sanctuary with a romantic past yet ahead of its time.

An inflexible 4 story box of glass, aluminium and steel built in the early 2000’s, the home in its ocean front location was impressive yet devoid of soul. The directive to minimise construction and avoid wasteful demolition required a transformative reimaging.

The brief to enhance and embellish the conjoined floorplan, for the entirety of the building front to back, encompassed daily living and entertaining spaces. Maintaining sightlines to water views and rear landscape while enhancing privacy and light penetration from the south was essential.

Stripping back of all internals, individual living spaces were devised within the open plan to support function while providing alternative experiences and moods throughout the day, week and seasons.

The layering of a diverse yet contained materials palette with a common textual expression of rustic yet refined was paramount. Tactility was amplified through the juxtaposition of naive materials; clay, grass weave, wool, limestone and oak, with the contradictory super futuristic finishes of sculpted, folded and forged metals expressed in equally soft organic form.

Meticulous detailing and custom pieces are framed by design icons. The furnishing story of vintage global collector punctuated by tribal organics creates an exciting dialogue that is chic, low key and irresistibly serene.
