King Penthouses

Plans for "King Toronto" flats, a residential development designed by Danish architecture studio BIG, have been unveiled. The project, located on king west street in downtown Canada, debuted in 2016 and more details and renderings of the scheme were released last year. Inspired by Moshe Safdie's Habitat 67 collection and glass home "Maison DE Verre", "King Toronto" is made up of pixelated volumes that have been rotated to maximize light and views.

BIG designed "King Toronto", a collaboration between West bank and Allied Properties REIT, to create an architectural typology that would complement the site's traditional architecture while bringing nature into the city and creating a diverse public realm.

The development's topographical roof landscape forms four "hills", facing north, south, west and east, and connected by a central courtyard. A total of eight penthouses (two for each "hilltop") form a "floating shelter", ranging in size from 279 square metres to 418 square metres.

Through the use of steel and glass blocks to convey "an industrial chic aesthetic", the two northern apartments are rooted in the nearby industrial heritage, while the apartments on the southern hilltop are surrounded by dense vegetation. Here, a teahouse is housed on a stepped slope that becomes a glowing beacon at night, as well as a greenhouse and winter garden overlooking the courtyard.
